Book #5

This month's Book Club Book is "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett

Here is a quick summary of what you can expect from this Best Seller:
Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.
Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.
Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town...

Summary:
"My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973.

"So begins the story of Susie Salmon, who is adjusting to her new home in heaven, a place that is not at all what she expected, even as she is watching life on earth continue without her — her friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her killer trying to cover his tracks, her grief-stricken family unraveling. Out of unspeakable tragedy and loss, THE LOVELY BONES succeeds, miraculously, in building a tale filled with hope, humor, suspense, even joy.

7/26/09 Meeting Notes

We had a great time at Olive Garden for Sunday Lunch and wish that you all could have been there!! Here are some notes from the meeting:

I. Overall everyone enjoyed "Keepsake Crimes" and a few of the members are even continuing on with the series (Yay!!)...Here are some of the questions that Bridget asked us...

1. Consider the ending...Did you expect it or were you surpried by what happened? Was is neatly wrapped up or was it unresolved?
--None of us guessed who the murderer was and definietly did not expect the reasoning behind the murder...It was wrapped up for the most part but we all wanted to know what happend with Carmela and Shamus ( I am personally hoping that they get back together, bc I really liked him!!)...We all loved the invisible ink (clever Carmela!!)

2. Can you pick out a passage that strikes you as particulary profound or interesting?
--"Never argue with someone who buys ink by the gallon"

Fun Facts:
-St. Cyril's Cemetery does not exsist in New Orleans
-Oven wall vaults are used in St Louis Cemetery in New Orleans
-Vanishing ink pens for scrapbooking do exsist!

II. Next Book Club Meeting
--The next Book Club Hostess is Samantha
--This month's book is "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger
--Can be purchased at Barnes and Nobles for $14.95
--The next book club meeting will be held at the Rave movie theatre to enjoy a showing of this movie (Time and date to be determined at a later time)

Summary:
"The Time Traveler's Wife is the story of Clare, a beautiful art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry finds himself periodically displaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Carmela Bertrand, owner of Memory Mine, a scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter, is shocked when a body is suddenly handed down - a dead body! If that isn't bizarre enough, her soon-to-be-ex husband, Shamus Meechum, quickly comes under fire as the number one suspect! As Carmela kicks off a new round of scrapbooking classes and designs a commemorative scrapbook for St. Cyril's above-ground cemetery, Shamus appeals to her for help.
